What is Ethno Medicinal Garden?
Ethno Medicinal Garden (EMG) is a type of garden
established by planting only medicinal plants that are used by the
indigenous traditional systems of medicine. EMG differs from other
botanical gardens in that it possesses only herbal plants.
Introduction
FRLHT has established Ethno Medicinal Garden (EMG) with a collection of more than 1,200 species including species of conservation concern in its campus, which serves as a live repository of medicinal plants.
The current holdings of the garden cover 375 genera and 120 families and as we keep adding unique species, these number will keep going up.
These Medicinal plants are laid out in a user friendly and informative way with 32 thematic sections based on their unique features, habit, habitats etc. These themes include plants used in Primary health care, skin & hair care, dye yielding, Aromatic medicinal plants, highly traded medicinal plants etc to name a few. Each of these themes consists of 25-35 plant species accompanied by signage with brief information about their local names, botanical name, description, distribution and medicinal uses. Signage provide salient information to visitors representing different user groups like scholars of ISM, students, researchers, traders, entrepreneurs etc. A visit to the Ethno Medicinal Garden will familiarize them with medicinal plants used in the Indian Medical Heritage.
