Other comments |
Based
on a survey conducted by S.R.Ramesh in Coorg, over a period of 10 years only
one plant of S.oblonga was
recorded. The exploitation is more when compare to the area of occupancy and
thin population. Regeneration is poor. Fruits are often damaged by borers. It
could possibly be a substitute for S.
reticulata. As on today there is no trade in Tamil Nadu. However, since
all Salacia species are under
threat in the extraction on a new drug for diabetes this species may also
become under future threat. Proportion global population in Tamil Nadu <
15%. |
